Module 7 - Values systems: why they are important for collaboration

What Are Values?

Values influence priorities and motivations. If you understand someone's core values, you can better understand what drives them and what's most important to them in their work. This helps you align priorities and motivations.

Values impact how people communicate and approach problems. People with different values systems may communicate and problem-solve very differently. Understanding these differences allows you to bridge communication gaps and find common ground.

Values shape people's goals and definition of success. Knowing what success looks like to someone, based on their values, allows you to understand their goals and find ways to achieve shared goals together.-

Understanding values builds empathy and trust. Making the effort to understand someone's values system demonstrates empathy and a desire to see their perspective. This builds mutual understanding and trust, which facilitates collaboration.

Values determine how open people are to different ideas. Some values lead people to be more open to innovation while other values promote tradition and convention. This influences how open they are to ideas.

Shared values unite people. When you understand you share fundamental values with someone, it creates a sense of unity and shared purpose, which promotes collaboration.
